355 Students Take Part in Second English Language Olympiad in Khoms Event brings together learning and competition through listening, reading, spelling and maze challenges

The city of Khoms hosted the second edition of the English Language Olympiad starting Wednesday, 16 September, organised by the Spoken English programme that offered through YouLearnt's platform. The event drew 355 students, with around 500 parents and family members in attendance, supported by an organising team of 30 people.

The Olympiad ran over three days, combining competition, learning and social interaction. Students took part in a range of English language competitions designed to test their skills in a practical, interactive way, including listening, reading and spelling contests, alongside a maze competition. Preparations for the event spanned a full week, with the organising team handling logistics, activities and competition setup to deliver a complete educational and recreational experience for students and their families.

The competition was crowned with an exceptional prize package that delighted the winning students, with top performers walking away with iPads in recognition of their outstanding achievement at the Olympiad.

Program Manager Abdelmoneim Gaith said the goal of such events is to provide a genuine, encouraging environment for using English, allowing students to move from classroom-based language use to practising it in situations that require interaction, participation and communication. He added that this builds students' confidence in applying what they have learned in practical settings, beyond the traditional classroom.

Yaser Selim, CEO of YouLearnt, said the platform supports efforts to develop students in a well-rounded way, both academically and in terms of social skills and interpersonal engagement. He noted that the English Language Olympiad brings both elements together: students continue learning through games and challenges, while the event itself gives them the chance to gather, compete and collaborate, helping build their social and communication skills.

YouLearnt operates in digital education and training, with a particular focus on developing language and professional skills. The Spoken English programme is one of its English language offerings. The platform has run other educational and community activities in Libya in recent months, including an event held at the Roman Theatre in Khoms in April 2026 to mark World English Language Day, which featured student performances and plays in English alongside the recognition of language programme graduates.

Now in its second consecutive year, the Olympiad reflects an effort to connect digital learning with real-world experience, bringing together hundreds of students and their families in a format that goes beyond a traditional competition to combine learning, practice and social interaction.
