Parenting is a long journey filled with ups and down but the potential it holds can be felt through life. Many strive to be great parents only to be utterly baffled with the challenges along the way. Its importance cannot be understated, laying the groundwork for a child’s development and character through life.

Parent in this case is more of an umbrella term referring to the individuals who care for a child, invested in their wellbeing. Even the love parents have for their children isn’t enough to prepare them for the challenges of raising a new life. Fortunately much research has been overtaken to allow parents to overcome the pitfalls of raising children and raise them with love.

Effects of positive parenting

Contrary to what it may sound like, positive parenting isn’t just an approach that lacks discipline or consequences. No, that simply does far more harm than good. It’s about love, respect and ensuring children can be the best they can. After all, parenting is about guiding and teaching, not controlling. Mistakes will be made but that’s all right, what matters is making the effort to write those wrongs and being present for the children.

The effects of positive parenting influence both parents and children. It ensures that parents are more consistent when interacting with their children, It breeds trust while making children happier and generally more optimistic. This also helps them become more resilient and capable of dealing with challenges. The gentle approach of positive parenting also has children more understanding of why rules are there so they’d be more likely to obey them. It sets a good role model for children, who naturally pick up on behavior by watching. Positive parenting also influences the relationships children build with others (1)(2).

Positive parenting strategies

Even with experience, parenting isn’t devoid of struggle. There’s no universal answer to it and mistakes are more than likely to occur. But it’s not the end of the world, so long as parents and children are willing to overcome those mistakes, they can bounce back even stronger. Children who feel safe and capable are those with a better set of morals and consequently more motivated to behave. Research shows that positive parenting tends to have a stronger effect if a parent starts early on. Children are very impressionable, like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression (3)(4)

A number of methods have been devised for positive parenting, showing their association with improved behavior. They help stress ways to teach kids and prepare them for the future, emphasize the importance of family time even as children grow older. Some examples of methods include:

1-Finding quality time and being there for children, this fosters trust and ensures they will turn to parents for help.

2-Respecting their independence, letting them make their own choices even if they mess up, mistakes can actually be great teachers.

3-Empathizing and understanding their feelings, just because they’re younger doesn’t mean children have it easy all the time. An understanding presence they can turn to would mean a lot.

Parenting is a deep and complex affair, a quest through which caretakers take responsibility for a new life. A journey requiring patience, love and understanding, parenting forms a crucial part of a child’s life. Children have much to learn about life but with the right touch, parenting can be a beacon leading to greatness.
