Small time beginnings aside, online learning has quickly grown to be a trend in many parts of the world. It’s become an increasingly popular option thanks to its flexibility and range of subjects, all the more so as it continues to develop with the evolution of technology. Online learning represents great potential for education.
Said potential is exactly why it appeals to a vast range of people in the world. For instance, international students who may not have the means to relocate to campus or caregivers who can study while taking care of their family. Online learning has something for everyone, leaving a massive impact on the educational process.
Types of Online Learning
There is much more to online learning than meets the eye. It’s not simply a matter of finding material over the internet and learning that. The development of online learning has given rise to a number of types and variants for the process. Such as:
1- Synchronous learning; where virtual classes take place in real time, basically class in a video chat form.
2- Asynchronous learning; learners follow pre-recorded classes with requirements that people can fit times that suit them.
3- Open schedule; it works like asynchronous learning, the difference being the workload. Students have to fulfill requirements on a deadline over the semester.
4- Blended learning; also known as hybrid learning, this is a combination of online and traditional classes, commonly used with subjects relating to lab sessions.
5- Collaborative online learning; as the name implies, groups of students work together through classes with much feedback from teachers. They improve their communication and teamwork skills (1)(2)(3).
