Enchant and educate: the everlasting impacts of storytelling on academic education 3 Reasons why storytelling is a powerful teaching technique
Enas Hussein
Long before technology made a unique, radical change in the field of education, teachers relied on their creativity to introduce valuable information and maintain a powerful connection with their students. They relied on an ancient technique known as storytelling to ensure they conveyed a message and kept their students engaged. The art of orally painting an image; this art of storytelling has offered humanity exceptional means to imagine and delve into realms of creativity (1)(2)(3).
The age-old tradition of storytelling has proved to be a successful tool in the field of education throughout the years. Through the art of storytelling, a teacher takes his students on a journey where knowledge and imagination meet. ‘‘For thousands of years, storytelling has provided insight, entertainment, understanding, and education to human beings.’’ Storytelling has many advantages in teaching and it should be maintained and developed for excellent outcomes. Here are reasons why storytelling is a powerful teaching technique.
Engagement and participation
When delivering the material in the shape of a story that is held together with a plot, students become attentive to the details and are encouraged to interact with the events from start to finish. Studies in psychology also proved that information delivered as a narrative has a high chance of helping the listeners remain enthralled and involved with the story. Through a powerful tool such as storytelling, students can become active participants, eager learners, and good listeners.
Memory performance and concentration
It’s scientifically proven that human brains and memory perform well when the received information triggers sensory, emotional, or social connotations. Therefore, transferring knowledge through a story creates a vivid experience, filled with emotions and sensory experiences that help the student concentrate and memorize it for a long time. Mere facts tend to be forgotten and stored in short-term memory, while stories with enriched language and captivating plots tend to be memorable (4).
Creativity and critical thinking
Weaving a well-structured story that is filled with brilliant imagery and eloquent language ignites the students’ imagination, and creativity, and inspires them to visualize topics from different angles and points of view. Storytelling also enhances the potential of critical thinking and assists learners in drawing connections between different ideas and subjects. Stories feed the learners' curiosity and allow them to think beyond the surface. Storytelling impacts the student’s intellectual creativity and fosters their critical thinking; an important skill that would benefit them in the future.
An archaic yet potent tool, as the storytelling method, can bring about both intellectual and educational success to the class. By applying the storytelling technique regularly, learners can gain benefits portrayed in enhanced creativity, critical thinking skills, improved language, memory capacity, attentiveness, and collaboration. A good teacher is often a smart storyteller who learns how to keep his students encouraged to learn, and delighted while they learn. A powerful tool as storytelling can transform classrooms into dynamic venues that inspire enchanting and fruitful education.
