The world around us is a tapestry woven from intricate threads of cause and effect, interconnectedness, and real-world scenarios. Traditional textbooks often present information in a compartmentalized way, leaving students yearning for a deeper understanding of how these concepts play out in practice. This is where case studies step in, offering a captivating alternative approach to learning. These in-depth analyses of real-world scenarios provide students with a window into the complexities of various disciplines, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving abilities and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Case studies serve as catalysts for active learning. Through in-depth analysis of real-world scenarios, students are presented with the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills. They are encouraged to question assumptions, analyze information, and formulate well-reasoned arguments. This hands-on approach fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter and its practical applications (1).
The essence of case studies
A case study is a detailed investigation of a particular subject, often a person, group, or situation. Researchers delve into nearly every aspect of the subject, meticulously analyzing their history and experiences to identify patterns and understand the causes behind behaviours. This method transcends specific disciplines, finding application in fields (2)(3).
Strengths, benefits and considerations
Like any research method, case studies possess both strengths and weaknesses that researchers must consider when determining their suitability for a particular investigation. A key advantage of case studies lies in their ability to explore phenomena that are difficult or even impossible to recreate in a controlled laboratory setting (4).
The benefits of case studies extend beyond mere description. By engaging with case studies, students develop critical thinking skills as they analyze information. Also, it identifies key themes, and draws conclusions about the subject matter. Furthermore, case studies can foster empathy and understanding, allowing students to examine situations from diverse perspectives (5).

Case studies bridge the gap between theory and practice. It offers a compelling approach to learning, enriching the educational experience for students across various disciplines. By delving into real-world scenarios, case studies encourage critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper understanding of complex issues. By engaging with real-world scenarios, case studies enrich the educational experience for students across various disciplines.
