Programs that focus on social and emotional learning aim to create a more positive and productive classroom environment. This can benefit both students and teachers by improving their overall well-being. A study suggests that even if teachers are feeling stressed or down, using social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies can help them maintain good relationships with their students. The results are from a sample of 80 first- and second-grade teachers located in three socioeconomically and geographically diverse regions of the USA (1).

This article investigates whether Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs actually make a difference. In other words, it explores whether these programs help students develop the skills they need to succeed in life.

Social-emotional learning programs offered to all students (universal interventions) are effective. These programs help students develop important skills like managing emotions, understanding others' viewpoints, and making good choices. They've also been linked to fewer emotional and behavioral issues.

The Collaborative for academic, social, and emotional learning (CASEL)

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as ‘the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

The five key skills

Social and emotional learning (SEL) helps people develop five key skills:

  1. Knowing oneself: understanding one's emotions, strengths, areas of difficulty, and values is essential.
  2. Managing oneself: managing oneself entails regulating emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in a healthy manner.
  3. Understanding others: this means being able to see things from someone else's perspective and feeling empathy for them.
  4. Building relationships: this involves making and keeping good connections with others.
  5. Making good choices: this means considering different options and making healthy decisions in all kinds of situations (2).

The importance of social-emotional leadership is backed by science

A study investigates the effectiveness of a schoolwide social and emotional learning (SEL) program. The CASEL School Guide is a framework that helps schools implement SEL programs. Researchers examined the effects of the School Guide on elementary students in low-performing schools. Students in schools with the School Guide showed greater gains in social-emotional competence compared to students in schools with a standard SEL program. These findings highlight the importance of a well-implemented, schoolwide SEL program for improving student outcomes. However, the effectiveness of the program depends on the school's leadership.

Merely integrating social-emotional learning into education without addressing the underlying issues of discriminatory teaching practices, curricula, and school policies will not suffice, especially for students of color who are disproportionately affected across various aspects of well-being. It is crucial to broaden the scope and implementation of social-emotional learning to cater to the diverse needs of all students, thereby fostering more effective and equitable support for their long-term success (3)(4).

In conclusion, the evidence overwhelmingly supports the effectiveness of (SEL) programs in enhancing students' well-being and academic success. However, the success of these programs is intricately tied to the leadership within schools. Educators’ role is pivotal in championing SEL initiatives, creating an environment where students feel valued, understood, and supported.
