Perhaps it would not be an exaggeration to say that books have been a constant in millions of lives. Books aren’t simply a collection of words, they provide opportunities for new experiences, expanding vocabulary, improvement and even self-discovery. Reading allows people to witness all the magic happen.

A book is a magical journey that can take place again and again. Even an old re-read book can bring a feeling of contentment and joy to its owner. In the words of Charles W. Elliot, books are the quietest and most constant of teachers, they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.

Benefits of reading and books

Children and adults alike have much to gain from books, something that hasn’t changed even in this digital age with means like audiobooks that have been replacing books. Unlike audiobooks and podcasts, books offer deep content and experience with no distractions to boot. They even help child development and posses a number of other benefits, such as:

1- Knowledge, education and language use; books are the cornerstones of knowledge, providing the basis for a lifetime of learning. They can also help improve language and vocabulary.

2- The increase of creativity and imagination; studies prove that when a person reads a sentence, their mind automatically makes an image. That way, books provide much inspiration.

3- Accessible sources of knowledge and enjoyment; while being generally associated with knowledge, books are a great source of entertainment as well. They’re affordable and easy to access in a number of forms.

4- Promoting growth and self-awareness; reading leads to a journey that provides insight into others and even the self. Books can also provide insights into other facets of identity (1)(2)

Significance of reading for children

A child’s reading skills are vital for all aspects of life. Even simply reading with children can have great advantages. Such as:

1- Preparation for academic success; in that it gives them a chance to communicate and practice their language skills while also developing their listening skills.

2- Fostering bonds; parents or caretakers reading to their children can become a great opportunity for the child to develop trust in them and give them a shared experience to develop their bond further.

3- Growing a love of reading; children are generally happy to have their parents reading with them. This could lead to them associating reading with happiness, fostering a love of reading and later a commitment to learning (3)(4)(5)

Books are a constant in human life, providing much advantage to those willing to seek them. Reading provides a gateway to knowledge, the greatest treasure of humanity. Both are sure fire means of earning skills that will last with people throughout life.
