To explore the STEM learning system from a parent's perspective, it is essential to understand the benefits and drawbacks associated with this educational approach. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, is a curriculum designed to educate students in these disciplines using an interdisciplinary approach that emphasizes practical problem-solving and innovation (1)

 

Parents and caregivers play a critical role in nurturing a child's STEM education, both in schools and through enriching experiences at home. This article will discuss the benefits and disadvantages of this system among other useful information as a preparation for making a decision (2).

 

Benefits of STEM learning system 

STEM learning system provides numerous benefits for children, here are some of them:

Preparation for future careers: STEM education equips children with the skills and knowledge needed for success in a technology-driven world. 

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills: STEM learning encourages children to think critically, analyze problems, and develop creative solutions. 

Hands-on learning and engagement: STEM education often involves hands-on, experiential learning activities that engage children and make learning more enjoyable . 

Interdisciplinary learning: STEM education integrates multiple disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), helping children see connections between different subjects.

Drawbacks of STEM learning system 

It is imperative for parents to know the disadvantages of this system as well as the benefits: 

STEM programs favor some students over another: as they usually take care of high achievers, neglecting lower performers. These students have potential, but lack the support to reach it, creating an elitist environment.

Overemphasis on academics: in some cases, there may be an overemphasis on academic achievement in STEM education, leading to stress and pressure on children to perform well in these subjects.

Limited access and resources: not all schools have the resources or infrastructure to provide quality STEM education.

STEM programs often start in middle school: considered too late by many experts. To spark genuine interest and motivation, STEM should begin in elementary school. Otherwise, students may lack essential skills for later learning.

The ideal age to introduce the STEM learning system to students is at a very young age, even as early as infancy and toddlerhood. The recommended age to start introducing STEM education to students is during their early childhood years, ideally before they reach elementary school. By starting STEM education early, children can build a solid foundation in STEM subjects, enhance their language skills, establish a strong base for math and science learning, foster a love for learning, and connect with the world around them through real-world applications and examples (8)(9).
