Perhaps it can be said that family is near universal, such is their influence in life. It’s not simply a matter of blood ties, people who care about each other and are committed to one another, that’s all it takes to be family. Family acts as a basis that affects a person’s relationships, health, work and even their very self.

People’s first experiences are with family, it may even be said that families are everyone’s first teachers. They guide and protect younger members, providing connections, a sense of purpose and bonds that last a lifetime. As they say, family is where life begins and love never ends.

The multifaceted importance of family

Growth, emotional support and a feeling of belonging, all of these and more are the reasons why family can be considered the backbone of society. Generally, when people need others they can count on when all chips are down, they need to turn no further than their family. Other examples of their significance include:

1- Physical health; it’s safe to say family would be one’s first teachers in life. It is they who ensure that members know to look out for themselves while offering protection in times of need.

2- Morality; parents and families are the ones who teach children right from wrong, becoming the basis for moral development as people grow.

3- Cognitive, social and academic development; families are the ones who begin teaching cognitive skills like critical thinking while supporting academic growth and preparing members for social interactions.

4-Security; family provides both emotional and economic support, giving members an enduring sense of safety and security (1)(2).

Nurturing relationships and creating lasting memories

Family bonding can be any kind of thing, the most important part is that members enjoy spending time together. This reminds each member that they’re cared for, that they have a place to belong in the family, giving them a chance to flourish. It also comes with the bonus of the members creating memories they would value for years to come. Family bonding is also good for children’s emotional and mental well being. Some activities families could partake in like taking a walk, playing sports together, having a family meal or playing a game night, activities vary, and the bond is getting stronger (3)(4)

No matter the type, the importance of family cannot be understated. While they may be taken for granted, one has to remember their worth, the bonds they offer and the pillars they represent which support them over life. It’s true what they say, family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.
