Shades and hues: a journey through the wonders of colors, their meanings and roles in the kaleidoscope of life General overview about colors, their meanings and their different interpretation across the cultures or products
Malaz Dhirar
There are colors all around the world. From the white of the clouds to the gray of the streets and even the dark shades of night. It can be said that color is essentially perception, the brain picks up data and incorporates it as different shades of colors. It’s almost like color is where the brain and the world meet.
There is much more to colors than meets the eye. They have the power to influence moods and emotions while serving as a way to express individuality. They bear numerous meanings connected to experience, cultural beliefs and even time. Colors can be a strong communication tool, especially with the meanings involved, useful in different aspects of life (1)(2).
Color meanings
The meanings of colors vary around the world. Taking the color yellow as an example, it’s generally considered to be a bright, energetic color synonymous with good things. But in Latin America, yellow is actually a color of death and mourning. Meanings can also differ across periods of time, like in the past green used to be a color associated with poison and yet now it’s connected to harmony and healing.
Some examples of color meanings are;
1- Red; this intense, vibrant color is associated with love, passion, even danger and aggression.
2- Blue; a calm, serene color usually linked to trust and tranquility. It is also linked to faith and intelligence as well as fragility and sadness.
3- Purple; majestic as well as mysterious, purple has long since been linked to luxury. Other meanings include enlightenment, power and ambition.
4- Pink; the color most commonly associated with femininity and romance. It’s a soothing color linked with compassion.
5- Black; a color commonly connected with negativity, it can also represent evil and death. But it is also associated with elegance and sophistication (3)(4)(5).

Roles of colors in life
Colors are an integral part of life. People have favorite colors, ones that make them feel good and what they link it to. They can be very useful with decorations and even the color of clothes makes a real difference to a person. The role colors play in certain areas like art and design cannot be understated (6).
Businesses use colors a lot as well, incorporating shades and hues for their brands. Certain colors are attention-grabbing and a lot of decisions about products are influenced by colors. Colors are an indication of a product’s freshness, while also affecting expectations in regards to food.
Be it beauty, communication, emotions and even self-expression, colors can do all that and more. They are perhaps as multifaceted as the hues and shades they present. People may take them for granted, ever present as they were but imagine, what would a world without colors be like?
