Feedback is a cornerstone of effective teaching and learning and serves as an important tool to guide student development and improve academic performance. It is defined as information given to learners about their performance or understanding.
Feedback plays a crucial role in the student learning process. It helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses, know their academic standing, overcome obstacles, increase their motivation to learn, and increase their confidence and self-efficacy.
Improved Psychological Learning Outcomes
Positive feedback can increase students' confidence in the challenges they face during the learning process. It can improve their academic performance without making them afraid of making mistakes. A study reports that women who received positive feedback in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields reported higher confidence, belonging, and self-efficacy and showed greater interest in the subjects than those who received objective feedback (1)(2)(3).

Improved physical learning outcomes
Feedback facilitates skill acquisition and mastery by providing students with information about their strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to develop behaviors and further refine their skills. By emphasizing correct movements, techniques or strategies, positive feedback helps students internalize correct movement patterns and develop a "memory muscle" over time, leading to skill development and mastery (4)(5)(6).
It also guarantees the promotion and long-term participation in physical activities. The more students received positive feedback, the more likely they were to develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and maintain an active lifestyle. This is evident in a study showing that the group that received positive feedback learned better when learning the basketball free throw than the group that only received truthful feedback. This shows that positive feedback is more effective in learning sports skills.
Increased motivation and engagement
Feedback has a positive effect on students' motivation to learn and class participation. In a study of 362 Australian students, personal goal setting was found to play a mediating role in the link between teacher feedback and academic achievement. Students who received feedback showed increased motivation and engagement. In a separate study of 746 students aged 16 to 18, feedback beliefs, which include factors such as self-efficacy, usefulness, responsibility, and willingness to act on feedback, were identified as mediators in the relationship between personality traits, performance goal orientation, and students' use of feedback. Therefore, feedback helps promote student development on academic, personal, and psychological levels (7).
In summary, teachers should consider positive feedback because it has a positive impact on students. They must be aware that critical feedback builds students' self-esteem and confidence. Educators must help improve their students' academic performance to achieve better learning outcomes.
