What comes to mind when the word hero comes up? Perhaps heroes of myth or infamous media heroes? For long have heroes been venerated in the world, not only a source of admiration but also inspiration. Courage, altruism, compassion, all these and more are the characteristics of a hero.

But such traits are not as rare as it may seem, they can be found in anyone. As highly regarded as heroes are, sometimes people forget that they are human as well. They weren’t born the exceptional people they’re known as, they were just like anyone else. So that leaves the question, what makes a hero?

Characteristics of a hero

Heroes can appear anywhere, regardless of background. One doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero. What sets heroes apart are their choices, their actions. Taking doctors as an example, they work hard and learn all they can to protect and save lives.

The bottom line is anyone can be a hero, it just comes down to character. Here are a few examples of traits that heroes possess;

1-Courage; perhaps the most common trait associated with heroism. Overcoming fear and facing up to challenges despite the risk is synonymous with heroes.

2-Empathy; a reminder that heroic traits can be very useful in life. Empathy is part of what drives heroes forward, spurring them to help those in need.

3-Passion; another driving factor in the actions of heroes. Passion doesn’t just motivate heroes forward, it keeps them determined to do the best they can.

4-Perseverance; the ability to do something without stopping for anything is important for a hero, inciting them to push past obstacles and reach their goals (1)(2)(3)

The roles of a hero

The benefits of heroism fit with the multi-faceted dimension of being human. Be it survival, cognitive or even spiritual benefit, there’s a lot to be said about what heroes have done for the world. Heroes are like the shining stars, providing humanity with inspiration, salvation and guidance (4)(5)

Heroes are a reminder of all that is good in the world, harbingers of change and development. Other roles include bringing hope, wisdom and safety.  Moreover, becoming examples of morality, meaning and purpose. Also, providing energy and motivation to face hardships while helping find solace and healing.

Heroes continue to touch hearts and souls, becoming guiding lights to humanity. What makes a hero isn’t power or background, but character and actions. Heroes aren’t just impossible objects meant for admiration but role models to help people be the best they can be, that they too can be heroes.
