A process as old as civilization, communication is an integral part of human life. Humans are social beings by nature, communication enables them to both reach out to others. Communication is a vital part of what makes life what it is. 

Communication is a two way street, one has to be good at listening as well as talking or there’s no point. It might be easy to take for granted but it’s a complicated process which is effective in many aspects. It can lead to understanding others, better relationships and improved life choices. These are just a few of the many benefits communication has to offer. 

 

Improving communication

There are those who struggle with communication and so choose to avoid it, certain that they’re going to fail. But the fact is, anyone can improve their ability to communicate if they just put in the effort (1)

Communication helps one grow, allowing freedom of expression as well as making connections with others. Communication has a profound role in many of life’s aspects, be it academic, professional, social or personal life. 

 

Reasons to improve communication

Communication is a vital asset to people. To communicate well is to understand and be understood. It can even be said that effective communication can do wonders for every aspect of one’s life. A few reasons being: 

 

1- Raising self-awareness; being self-aware is all about attention and understanding. By interacting with others, a person comes to learn subtle cues and adapt according to the situation. 

2- Empathy; empathy means understanding how others feel, something that happens naturally with communication. Thus, the better communication one builds, the better the empathy. 

3- Conflict resolution; A lot of arguments and conflict can start with miscommunication. Simply letting everyone’s voice be heard can go a long way to resolve and even prevent any misunderstandings. 

4- Teamwork; good communication fosters stronger understanding between people, a team which communicates well is a strong one. A strong team understands their roles in the group. 

5- Stress relief; stress happens to anyone, it’s easy for life to overwhelm people for one reason or the other. Sharing what bothers the person can alleviate a great weight off their chest (2)(3)(4)

In brief, communication has always been a crucial part of human life. And yet people can take it for granted or even disregard it out of fear of failure. But practice makes perfect. Even if a person stumbles while communicating, the worst thing to be done is not even trying. As the saying goes, fear is not failure but fear of trying. Would it really be so bad to go out of one’s comfort zone rather than be chained down by fear forever?
