Online learning has evolved tremendously over the years, driven by the ever-advancing technology of this digital age. The sheer availability of the internet has only increased its reach and popularity and it continues to open up possibilities for people all over the world. 

With the passing of time and increasing development in the field came a number of changes as the interest and use of online learning grew. There are now numerous trends and strategies to facilitate learning and even teaching online, all the more to meet the diverse needs of all learners

 

Trends of online learning 

There has been a rise of trends involved with online learning over the years. The approaches differ but the end goal is the same, to personalize learning and keep students interacting while making sure the process is suitable for them (1)

Some examples of trends are;

 

1-Microlearning; a method that focuses on short, concise, learning modules. This offers quick information access and retention, with users able to engage in this trend almost anywhere. 

2-Mobile learning; as the name implies, learning wherever students may be. This one catches the eyes of many as it offers good feedback, chats, discussions and much more.

3-Virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR); both are used to stimulate an engaging learning experience for learning, they connect the distance between theory and actual practice. 

4-Gamification; using elements from games like leader boards raises the interest and bolsters creativity, be it in class or even the workplace. It turns everyday subjects into something extraordinary, giving students a sense of achievement.

Online learners and the future

Online learning is expected to keep growing and developing, especially with the development of technology and all that entails. And it’s not just about the virtual classrooms anymore, online learning can prepare prospective future employees for their first job. It can impart several skills that would be incredibly important at work (2)(3)

Some examples of said skills are:

 

1-Commitment; work naturally requires some sacrifices from, but so does online learning. Students need to manage themselves, to commit to classes so they can learn, which prepares them for work later on.  

2-Adaptability; online learning helps foster adaptability, with students needing to learn to adjust to whatever comes their way. It involves resourcefulness and handling change well as well as leadership abilities (4)

3-Time management; good time management means working better to make the most of time. Since online learners already manage their time, this comes all the more natural for them. 

 

In conclusion, online learning is a beneficial method to millions in the world. It is a treasure trove of knowledge waiting to be discovered, one that’s very easy to reach. One can always take a few minutes in their day to give it a try, all it takes is a few clicks.
