For many teenagers, business is no longer something they plan to explore after university or several years in employment. It is something they can test this weekend with a smartphone, a free design tool, a social media account, and a simple product idea.

The strongest available statistics often measure Gen Z adults rather than teenagers specifically, so the two groups should not be treated as identical. However, the wider trend is clear. A 2026 LendingTree survey found that 51 percent of Gen Z respondents aged 18 to 29 had seriously considered starting a business during the previous year. The same report noted that 5.7 million new business applications were filed in the United States during 2025 (1).

A separate Gusto report found that Gen Z founders accounted for 9 percent of new businesses started in 2025, compared with 5 percent for Baby Boomer founders. The report was based on a survey of 1,051 founders who had launched businesses in 2025 (2).

In the United Kingdom, research from Simply Business and the Federation of Small Businesses found that almost 60 percent of young people either owned a business or were interested in owning one. At the same time, only 16 percent already had a business or were in the process of setting one up. That gap suggests that ambition is widespread, but many young people still need practical support, confidence, and a clear starting point (3).

The most important change is not that every teenager wants to become a millionaire. It is that entrepreneurship has become easier to try. A teenager can now validate an idea with a small audience before investing heavily in stock, premises, staff, or expensive technology.

That creates a new form of entrepreneurship: small, flexible, online, and often built around a teenager’s existing interests.

What teenagers are actually building

Teen businesses in 2026 do not all look like traditional companies. Many begin as small experiments that earn their first customer before they have a formal brand, business plan, or website.

Digital products

Teenagers are selling study guides, printable planners, revision templates, design assets, music samples, presentation templates, digital artwork, and short online courses.

Platforms such as Gumroad make it possible to sell a digital product without building a complete ecommerce website. A student who creates a useful revision planner can sell it repeatedly, rather than exchanging time for money with every customer.

The challenge is originality. A digital product must solve a real problem or provide a clear benefit. Copying popular templates, generating low quality material with AI, or selling content that the creator does not understand will not build a reliable business.

Handmade and personalised products

Etsy remains attractive to young makers because it gives handmade products an established marketplace. Teenagers are selling jewellery, candles, artwork, crochet products, clothing, stickers, stationery, room decorations, and personalised gifts.

Etsy permits teenagers aged 13 to 17 to sell with permission and direct supervision from a parent or legal guardian. The adult must own the account, provide the financial information, and accept responsibility for activity on the account (4).

This model teaches valuable lessons about product design, pricing, photography, packaging, customer service, inventory, and delivery. It also exposes a common misconception about online business: sales are only one part of the work. A successful shop depends on consistent quality and dependable fulfilment.

Content businesses

Some teenagers are building businesses around YouTube videos, newsletters, podcasts, short form video, livestreaming, and online communities.

A student who creates clear videos about mathematics, gaming, football analysis, fashion, cooking, music production, or exam preparation can eventually earn through advertising, sponsorships, memberships, affiliate recommendations, digital products, or services.

YouTube monetisation has age requirements. To receive payments through AdSense, a creator generally needs to be at least 18, although a parent or legal guardian can manage the approved account for someone under 18. The YouTube Partner Programme also has eligibility requirements, including audience and watch time thresholds (5).

This means that a teenage content creator is not simply making videos. They are learning audience research, storytelling, editing, search engine optimisation, thumbnail design, analytics, community management, and commercial judgement.

Local service businesses

Many of the most realistic teenage businesses are not purely digital. They include tutoring, dog walking, lawn care, car cleaning, photography, video editing, social media support for local businesses, technology help, sports coaching, party assistance, and holiday services.

These businesses often have a major advantage: they solve local problems and can earn revenue before the owner has a large online following.

A teenager who helps a local café create short videos may not need a large audience. They need one business owner who sees value in the service. A student who tutors younger pupils can begin with knowledge, trust, and time rather than expensive equipment.

Small software and AI services

Some young founders are building small software tools for narrow audiences. Examples include scheduling systems for sports clubs, revision tools for students, simple booking systems, workflow tools for creators, and research assistants for specialist communities.

The opportunity is not necessarily to build the next major technology company. It may be to remove one frustrating task for a very specific group of people.

This does not make success automatic. Social platforms are competitive and unpredictable. A teenager who depends entirely on one platform can lose access to an audience when an algorithm changes. The long term goal should be to build direct relationships through an email list, a customer database managed responsibly, or a community that does not depend on one feed.

AI reduces the cost of experimentation

AI tools can help a young founder move from an idea to a basic test much faster. A teenager can ask an AI assistant to help structure customer interview questions, compare product names, explain a spreadsheet formula, outline a landing page, or identify weaknesses in a business idea.

The cost of starting has fallen

A teenager no longer needs to purchase a large amount of inventory to test a product. They can use print on demand, preorders, digital downloads, freelance services, creator platforms, or a small batch produced at home.

Etsy can provide a marketplace for physical products. Gumroad can handle digital product sales. YouTube can provide a route to audience building and monetisation. AI tools can reduce the time required for research and production.

These platforms do not remove the need for business skills. They simply make the first experiment cheaper and faster.

What schools teach and what business requires

Schools teach many valuable foundations. Literacy helps a young person communicate with customers. Mathematics supports pricing and profit calculations. Science and technology can support product development. Art and design can strengthen branding. History and social studies can improve cultural awareness and decision making.

The problem is not that school teaches the wrong things. The problem is that many schools do not give students enough opportunities to use knowledge in situations where the answer is uncertain and another person must decide whether the work is valuable.

A classroom assignment usually has a deadline, a marking scheme, and a known teacher. A business has an unclear problem, an unpredictable customer, limited resources, and real consequences.

This does not mean that every student should leave school to become an entrepreneur. It means that schools should treat practical enterprise as a legitimate learning method, alongside academic study.

A school enterprise project could allow students to identify a local problem, interview potential users, create a small solution, calculate costs, test demand, present evidence, and reflect on what changed. The learning would include mathematics, writing, design, technology, ethics, teamwork, and financial literacy.

The OECD has identified entrepreneurship education, coaching, mentoring, finance, competitions, and networks as important forms of support for young entrepreneurs. It has also noted that schools can struggle with limited time and resources, assessment difficulties, and uncertainty about how entrepreneurship fits within traditional education (7).

Online learning gives teenagers access to practical instruction that may not exist in their school or local community.

A student can learn how to edit video, build a website, use a spreadsheet, create a product page, conduct customer interviews, understand copyright, calculate profit, or run a small advertising test.

The best online learning does not simply provide motivational content. It gives learners a process and asks them to produce something.

What parents should support

Parents do not need to become business experts. Their most useful role is to provide structure, safety, and honest questions.

Parents can support teenagers by:

Taking the idea seriously without assuming it will become a large company.

Helping the teenager create a small budget.

Encouraging customer research before spending money.

Reviewing platform rules and age requirements.

Helping with payment accounts, tax responsibilities, contracts, and shipping where necessary.

Setting reasonable time boundaries around school, sleep, and business activity.

Encouraging the teenager to keep records of income and expenses.

Helping them respond professionally to customers.

Making introductions to safe and reputable mentors.

Treating failure as information rather than embarrassment.

Parents should also caution against several risks.

A teenager should not share their home address, school location, private phone number, passwords, or personal documents with strangers. Meetings with customers should happen in safe public settings with an adult’s knowledge. Young creators should understand copyright, image rights, advertising disclosures, refunds, product safety, and data protection.

They should also be cautious about financial pressure. Buying large amounts of inventory, paying for expensive coaching, borrowing money, or spending heavily on advertising is unnecessary for most first experiments.

Teenage entrepreneurship in 2026 is not proof that traditional education has become irrelevant. It is proof that education must connect knowledge with action.

A teenager who builds a small business learns that an idea is only the beginning. They must understand people, communicate clearly, manage money, use technology responsibly, cope with rejection, and improve through evidence.

Schools can provide the foundation. Online learning can provide specialised knowledge. Families can provide safety and encouragement. Platforms can provide distribution. AI can provide leverage.

But none of these replaces judgement.

The most valuable outcome is not whether a teenager earns £50, £500, or nothing from a first project. It is whether they learn how to notice a problem, create a useful solution, test it honestly, and take responsibility for the result.

That is the kind of education that remains valuable in every economy.
