They say that teaching is more about knowledge, it’s about inspiring change. And it’s true, the process certainly does inspire change, in both students and teachers that is. Students learn and grow through the process of teaching, teachers also come to their own manner of development through their work and cultivating experience while honing their craft.

Teaching is a dynamic profession in that it needs to be adapted according to the needs of the students, making sure that the material can be engaging and inclusive. Educators can’t let their skills stagnate if they want to succeed, there are a number of ways and means to that end.

Teaching strategies

There’s no one size fits all solution when it comes to teaching. A teacher has to adapt according to the needs of the students and the situation to achieve a successful learning environment. As teaching is a variable craft, a number of methods have been developed to that end, including:

1- Group work; having groups of students working together, sharing ideas and feedback can be very effective. It works for cooperative learning and projects as well as inquiries.

2- Graphic organizing; providing students clear structures to record their thoughts, using pie charts, and headings to sort out the information while granting them deeper understanding of the material.

3- Responding to intervention; interventions were developed to help students having learning difficulties. The intervention itself depends on the difficulty level, examples would be changing teaching methods or partnering them up with a learning buddy.

4- Scaffolding; this refers to constructing learning bit by bit to reach smaller goals instead of a big one to simplify matters, this works for designing activities (1) (2) (3)

How to improve as a teacher

There is much to consider in the work of a teacher. Organizing a lesson plan, delivering the lesson well, ensuring the students follow, a lot of factors are involved in learning. Similarly, methods have been developed to hone teaching, such as:

1- Classroom management; the learning environment is important for success, dynamic lessons can help ensure that students stay engaged. Effective instructions and firm, clear routines all help smooth the process.

2- Active learning; engaging actively with lessons help bolster students’ understanding of the material. It is a good idea to encourage students to think about why their lessons matter even beyond the class.

3- Learning assessment; assessment is always important, providing feedback on how to improve. The same goes for teaching, knowing which parts students enjoyed, which ones they found difficult and so on can go a long way towards bettering the craft (4)(5)
