Baby steps, great leaps: a guide to child development and how caretakers can help children bloom Child development and its impact through life, advice to help children be the best they can be
Malaz Dhirar
Much has been espoused about the world’s resources and all the issues accompanying them, there is one that tends to be side-lined: children. Children are both the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future. Today’s children are the leaders and pioneers of tomorrow.
Child development is a complex matter, including many factors like physical and social development while taking into account how the culture and environmental factors play a part. Every child is unique, there is much parents and caretakers can do to foster their growth, helping them succeed in life (1).
Child development
Caring parental figures, a safe, nurturing environment are a few of the most important things for children. They are akin to blank canvases just waiting to be filled with a myriad of colorful experiences. They’re not just good at thinking outside the box, they don’t even see a box to begin with, allowing them to go past limitations with ease (2)(3).
They learn things quite early, even a few months old. Child development can be divided into five stages;
1- Physical; growth and changes happening to the body, a child learning movement and motor skills like crawling, walking and manipulating objects.
2- Social; this involves the child learning to make bonds. Through getting to know others they learn new skills, coming to enjoy spending time with others.
3- Cognitive; the child acquires skills connected to learning, reasoning and problem-solving. They begin to seek knowledge, like languages.
4- Emotional; by interacting with others, children learn to regulate their feelings, initially registering their worth and then classifying them accordingly.
5- Moral; this refers to how children identify right from wrong based on factors like laws and expectations. Thus it can be considered a part of social development as people and play a role here.
Tips to help children develop
A key factor in a healthy development for children would always be the parents’ or caretakers’ support. Positive parenting actually lowers the chances of troublesome behavior in children. This means a parent has to be kind but strict as well when the time calls for it (4).
While parenting takes many forms, there are practices that work with families in general regardless of setting. Aside from doing things like providing nutrition and being a role model, other things parents can do for children are;
1- Being a caring, supportive presence in their lives, showing the child how they are loved.
2- Ensuring that they have appropriate chances to learn and play, that they have lots of experiences.
3- Be sure to encourage activities they enjoy, thus fostering their passion.
4- Providing praise and recognition, giving them a sense of joy and achievement.
5- Fostering a sense of responsibility which allows them a sense of independence while preparing them to take care of others.

All in all, child development is a multi-faceted but vital matter that provides the basis of their identity, affecting them throughout life. By nurturing these young lives and helping them bloom, people can create successful communities and a society where everyone can thrive. Remember that the potential of children is truly vast. They may start with baby steps but with the right touch, they can take great leaps.
