What comes to mind when speaking of creativity? Perhaps new inventive measures people undertake everyday or simply the creative arts? But it was never simply about that, creativity is an important facet of life. Creative skills are what let people adapt and think outside the box. Those who think outside the box are never trapped, discovering many possibilities.
Creativity also helps children a great deal, in fact babies are natural, curious explorers who exercise creativity as they learn about the world. It serves as one of the areas which allows them to reach and exceed their potential. Creativity is beneficial for everyone, regardless of age (1)(2).
Creativity and child development
Creativity is often chalked up to an end result of a product like a painting or so. People often forget that the process is important as well. After all, it's where things like imagination and problem solving abilities are used. Imagination is synonymous with the ability to be resourceful, something made possible by creativity.
Creativity helps with skills in that it boosts hand eye coordination while fine motor skills. Trying many things also comes with the bonus of developing their imagination and learning through experiments. This way they get to discover their passions and talents. It leads to a stronger sense of self-discovery and further skills which can be incredibly handy everyday, not to mention they find different ways of expressing themselves. All of this culminates into the child growing up confident, coming into their own as they learn more about themselves and the world (3)(4).
How to maximize its influence
Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous. It’s not some genetic skill but one person can hone and develop throughout life. Children express creativity even in their response to the surroundings, it bolsters their focus, ingenuity and independence. Developing creativity allows themselves to exercise their imagination to relate to other people and maintain better control over their emotions.
There are numerous ways to help children shine with creativity, amongst them is simply time. Allowing children time to reach their creative potential takes time so they’d have the free time to expand their horizons. Strange as it may sound, even boredom can be a great catalyst to creativity, as children would be more motivated to think freely and break routine. Another important factor is curiosity, the starting point of creativity. Encouraging children’s natural curiosity and allowing them to find answers to their questions is a good way to strengthen creative potential (5)(6).
There is much more to creativity than meets the eye. While people may dismiss it, the fact is it plays a huge role in life. Remember that it is the centerpoint of innovation, a mark of the potential of mankind and the endless possibilities in the world.
