Assessments are essential tools in education, serving to evaluate students' understanding and progress. They come in various forms, from traditional tests to hands-on projects, and play a crucial role in informing teaching strategies and supporting student learning.

Assessments provide valuable feedback to both educators and learners, helping to identify areas of strength and areas needing improvement. Assessment should give fair feedback about students’ knowledge, considering individual differences. 

Designing formative assessment 

One of the most effective strategies is to follow the students’ progress. Formative assessments are a method of assessing learning that provides students with frequent, low-stakes practice coupled with immediate and focused feedback. These assessments have different forms, such as weekly quizzes, classroom surveys, informal assignments, and in-class group work. They assign the students’ academic progress and give overview of their areas of weakness and strength (1)(2)(3). 

The formative assessments must contain four fundamentals to achieve their aim. First, educators have to identify the learning gap and assign what their students know and what they need to know. Second, provide students with clear and descriptive feedback. Third, students have to be involved in their own learning and assessments by assigning tasks that need assistance from their monitors. Finally, for learning progression, the educators have to set short goals for their students after assigning their position in the learning process (4). 

Diverse assessment formats

Educators must be aware of the fact that students have individual differences among each other. So they have to take this difference in designing assessments into consideration. Creating a variety of assessment formats to serve different learning styles and preferences. This could include traditional methods such as written exams or quizzes, presentations, projects, or performance based assessments. 

Encouraging a variety of assessment formats enables students to showcase their comprehension and abilities in ways that align with their unique strengths, promoting inclusivity and fairness in the learning environment. Research has proven that diversity in assessment  methods can lead to better learning outcomes and improved perceptions of assessments (5)(6)(7).

Designing feedback forms 

Educators play a crucial role in assessment design by establishing precise evaluation criteria for student work and delivering detailed, actionable feedback that highlights strengths, areas for improvement, and future steps. Therefore, feedback can improve student motivation and engagement, leading to better learning outcomes. 

Feedback provides the students with plenty of opportunities for self-development. Students who received feedback on their draft assignments and had the opportunity to revise their mistakes showed a significant improvement in their performance compared to those who did not receive feedback (8).

To conclude, tutors must consider  individual differences when making assessments for their students. To achieve better learning outcomes, educators have to make the assessment regularly to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of their students and fill the learning gap or any misunderstandings in their curriculum.
