Class size is a controversial topic in educational domains. Class size is the number of students assigned to a single instructor in a learning environment. Moreover, it is a fundamental element shaping the dynamics of education systems worldwide. Class sizes play a vital role in a student's learning process, as they can significantly influence the quality of individualized attention students receive and ultimately shape their academic achievement, for better or worse.
Class management
The class size, whether large or small, has an impact on student achievement. According to teacher surveys, they assert that small class sizes have more potent learning outcomes than large class sizes. Small class sizes prevent any misbehavior, whereas large class sizes cause misbehavior that interrupts the teaching process and causes educators to spend too much time handling non-instructional tasks (1)(2).
Teachers emphasize that small classes are more manageable than large classes. Small classes provide a space for establishing rules and expectations, so the students will be more accountable for their behavior when they know that their teacher is able to closely monitor and address any disturbances. Therefore, small classes will lead to more academic achievement.
Class engagement
The class sizes have a significant impact on students' involvement and engagement in the class. Research has proven that in small primary classes, students feel more engaged, attentive, and active with the teachers. On the contrary, the students in large classes feel more distant and have a passive role in the class, which leads to lower learning outcomes (4)(5).
Small classes encourage students to interact with their teachers and achieve the highest levels of academic achievement. It also provides more opportunities for interaction, students may feel comfortable contributing to discussions, asking questions, and collaborating with their peers. Enhanced student engagement can contribute to a positive and conducive learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Teacher effectiveness
Teachers are an important factor in enhancing the quality of learning and improving students' performance. Research clarifies the characteristics of effective teaching that teachers in small classes can teach more quickly, allowing time for additional material to be taught. Provide more opportunities to engage students in learning. Focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the students (6).
It was also found that teachers in small classes have enthusiasm for teaching. They have positive attitudes toward children. Educators in small classes can recognize students' success with praise, unlike in large classes. Moreover, they can use humor to promote learning and motivate students. All of these characteristics create a positive atmosphere for learning.
To conclude, educational institutions must take studies that prove small class sizes achieve better learning outcomes into consideration. Educational institutions have to provide a good quality of education to students by giving them a chance to be seen by their monitors, which positively reflects on their engagement levels in classes.
